I’m well aware that the doily envelope liners I slaved over for our Save The Dates represent a totally unnecessary piece of wedding frippery. But, as I said to my mother only the other day, if you can’t be a little unnecessary about your own wedding, when can you be unnecessary?

Personally, I think they look beautiful, the perfect finishing touch if you will! It was also cheap, easy and relatively quick to do too.

However, I’m not going to sugarcoat the experience for you all.

On many of the wedding blogs I frequent brides lay out their (usually) beautiful and visually stunning DIY details and gush about how it was the hand-stamped place cards that made the wedding so perfect or the 100 handmade hanging paper pom-poms that added that essential personal touch. This is all true I’m sure, but what they fail to mention is that Wedding DIY projects are bloody boring.

It goes something like this…

After the first 10 envelopes – ‘Wow! They look great! I’m so glad I decided to do this. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy doing something creative. I knew I should have been a Blue Peter presenter. I LOVE YOU CRAFT KNIFE AND PVA GLUE.’

30 envelopes in – ‘I wish I could get the Mister to help me. But they must be perfect. Especially the one for my Gran. His big man hands would be useless. They look so pretty. Totally worth it. Totally.’

60 envelopes in – ‘Shit. I’ve run out of doilies’

65 envelopes in – ‘Fucking craft Knife and PVA glue.’

67 envelopes in – ‘I’m so over the whole doily thing’

75 envelopes in – ‘I do not appreciate being told that 99.9% of guests who open these envelopes will not even notice the STINKING DOILIES!’

80 envelopes in – *numb silence due to the unwavering monotony of the task*

85 envelopes in – ‘Yay! I’m finished, I’m finished!! They’re so beautiful, and it was such a breeze, and it was so inexpensive and it just makes them look, you know, soooo personal, don’t you think?’

Mr. LA: Don’t you need to address them all now.

Me: Fuck Off.

P.S I apologise for the profanity, doilies will do that to a girl.

P.P.S In case you fancy having as much fun as I did with a few doilies I used this and this as inspiration, ordered the envelopes from here and grabbed the doilies themselves from my local Wilkinsons. Overall, our Save The Dates cost around 80p each, including the card, envelope and liner and taking into account P&P for the various items ordered online (and the stupid customs charge we were lumbered with too). I do still have to purchase stamps of course, I’m off to the Post Office shortly!
