Thanks to the magic of Etsy and a particularly talented individual (who I shall of course reveal to you all in due course), our Save The Date cards should be one of the first things to arrive on our doorstep in New Year. The design is very art deco in style and is based on an original greetings card from the 1930s, I literally can’t wait to see them, I predict much squealing.
The prospect of mailing these beautiful cards got me thinking about ways to prettify the experience further, you know, make them feel really special when our guests open them.
And this is how it comes to be that my mother and I will spend a large chunk of boxing day gluing paper doilies inside envelopes. Yes, I’m talking about our first big W.D.I.Y (wedding-do-it-yourself).
OK, OK. It may sound a little crazy, but doilies are big news in wedding land. Brides-to-be craft them into everything from bunting to table centre pieces to confetti cones. Seriously.
I fear that decking out the whole of our venue in lacy paper would be overkill, but I think the tiniest touch might be quite delightful. Here, look, pretty….

I’ve been much inspired by Heather’s ‘For your tears of joy’ Save The Dates over on He asked. I said Yes. They represent possibly the most impressive piece of W.D.I.Y that I’ve happened to stumble across on the interwebz. Incredibly beautiful, no?
So, this afternoon I helped myself to 100 odd doilies in Wilkos and desperately tried to decide which colour envelope to go for. I could pick out the grey/pewter shade from our colour scheme or go for a basic brown envelope like Heather did, they do have that fabulous vintage feel to them. I also need to find something pretty to seal the envelopes with. I’m quite tempted by these actually. Ooooo… decisions, decisions!!
So what do we think ladies? Pretty… or pretty crazy? What would you line my envelopes with?

Thanks so much for your compliments and for linking to my blog!! Good luck with the crafting! The doily liners were actually pretty easy compared to the rest of my save the dates. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out!
Gorgeous!! It is so so perfect!! I meant to tell you, I was watching Don’t Tell The Bride last Sunday (for a divorcee who has a cat’s chance in hell of remarrying I am obsessed with wedding shows) and one of the couples got married at Pinewood. The guy picked it out because they both loved films and they had a 50s themed wedding. It was so cute and she was so delighted! I squeeed when I saw it… it is such a perfect venue for you guys x
Oooooo my goodness, I love!!! You’re making me want to get married again so I can have a good excuse for all that lovely stuff. I love brown envelopes/paper. I’ve wrapped all our christmas presents in brown paper this year with different coloured ribbons around each to brighten them up. And I was at a reclamation yard the other day where they’d put a tree up and the prezzies were done the same but using news paper instead of brown paper. It looked so cute. Back in the post war days when people didn’t have much they really used their imaginations to come up with ways of prettifying things using whatever was available to them, and I love that sort of look. People opening your envelopes will definitely be squealing in delight because they’re going to be unique and it’ll be obvious that time and care have gone into making them. I think its a great idea. I might have to copy you for our next birthday parties!
@Heather You’re welcome hun! I had to link on over, everyone should see your fabulous handiwork! I’ll def be sharing the finished product in the New Year, fingers crossed they turn out OK!
@m4dswine I’m glad you like the idea!! Better get gluing! I wish I had seen the tv programme, damn our lack of tele!! And I reckon the Swede will change his mind one day!! Patience my dear!
@MissisG Go on, renew your vows, ya know ya wnat to!!! I LOVE brown paper too, I did my xmas presents like that last year. I saw some presents wrapped in brown paper and a doily and a ribbon somewhere. Looked stunning, you would have loved it!! Newspaper sounds cute too, will have to remember that!

Oooo how truly fabulous! MUCH, much better than standard Save The Dates! They will look beautiful Franky!
I also love the look of gifts wrapped in brown paper with pretty ribbon, my friend does hers like it all the time! I have to admit I just use generic wrapping paper because it just gets ripped off and thrown away, but for prettifying the pressies it certainly makes a good impression!

Sooo happy I came across your blog! I love old school glamour & am getting married on the 30th Dec this year, our (my) theme is vintage glamour in black & white/ivory & includes lots of ribbon, silk, lace & pearls. Love your idea about the doilies, might have to pinch that one! x
