Mr. LA and I don’t really go in for Valentines day in a big way. We usually exchange silly cards (I make a point of choosing the rudest one I can find) and small gifts. It’s become a bit of a tradition for me to give him a book. For our very first Valentines day, I bought him the novel ‘Porno’ by Irvine Welsh because I thought it would seem a bit cheeky!!

Anyway, as I was wandering round the shops this morning, dodging the teddy bears and plastic roses, I found myself making a mental list of my favourite pink and red lipsticks.

Perfectly natural train of thought…. valentines day – kissing – lips -lipstick…. you see?

As soon as I got home I had a quick swatching session so I could share them with you!L-R Revlon Cherries in the Snow, Revlon Pink Pout, MAC Russian Red, MAC Up The Amp, MAC Girl About Town and MAC Lustering.

Personally, I would consider all of these must have shades!

Cherries in the Snow is my daytime red. When I’m pushed for time (in other words, most of the time) I spend 3 minutes on my concealer, foundation and brows and 2 minutes applying this as flawlessly as I can. Add a bit of mascara and I’m good to go. It’s a good trick, people instantly think you’re more groomed than you actually are, simply because of the colour of your lipstick!

Pink Pout didn’t swatch very accurately. On the lips it is much pinker. This is part of the Revlon matte collection. It can be a teeny bit drying but I adore the colour so much I don’t care.

MAC Russian Red is my go-to shade for when I need to glam things up a bit. I feel fabulous in it and the fact that it’s apparently a favourite of Dita von Teese only adds to the appeal! Again, it’s a matte shade but I love how pigmented it is and the way it leaves a lovely, even stain on my lips even after I’ve eaten a 3 course meal or sipped a few cocktails.

MAC Up The Amp is a purple toned pink. My boyfriend bought me this one for Christmas and I’ve been wearing it an awful lot since, particularly as it is an almost perfect colour match for the gorgeous leather gloves I wear everyday! I adore the way this can be worn quite subtlety (applied lightly the pink tones are more dominant) or built up for a more vibrant, full-on look.

MAC Girl About Town is fabulous, I don’t know how I survived without it for so long. I wore it on New Years eve and the colour made me smile every time I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror! The Amplified Cream formulation is amazing. It makes my lips look lovey and full and glossy.

MAC Lustering was one of my first MAC purchases. It’s a lustre formulation and the colour is divine. On days when I look terribly tired and worn out this shade really lifts my complexion and brightens up my face. It can be worn very lightly or built up into more of a statement pink.

It occurred to me as I was swatching these that these shades may not actually be suitable for wear on Valentines day itself. Mr LA tends to shy away from full on kissing when I’m wearing bold lipstick. I think he’s terrified of wearing it himself!

How about you? Any pink and red lippies you think I should check out?
