- I had the most amazing evening at the cinema on Thursday. I’d been looking forward to a screening of the 1929 silent film Pandora’s Box starring the incomparable Louise Brooks at the local art centre for what felt like ages and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The evening was made all the more special by the live piano player, an experienced silent film musician, who filled the auditorium with the incredibly beautiful score. Brooks was fabulous and the film was simply beautiful to look at. If you’re a fan of early cinema or the 1920s aesthetic in general, I’d urge you to hunt down a copy and watch it, it’s breathtaking.
- Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick in No. 71 Fatale. My evening with Miss Brooks made me come over all seductive and Friday saw me falling in love with this sultry red all over again. I love it, it’s a definite contender for my wedding day. Have a peek at me wearing it here and here.
- As I type this I can hear Mr. LA on the phone ordering a curry for our dinner. We plan to eat this on the sofa in front of a movie. There may also be wine. Bliss.
- The weather was fabulous in Devon today and, although I spent most of the afternoon chained to my desk working on my dissertation, the feeling of the sun hitting my back as it streamed in through the window was quite wonderful.
- The prospect of delicious food. I’m cooking another recipe from the Jamie Oliver Meals in 30 minutes book tomorrow and I can’t wait. It involves asparagus. Mmmmm.
Going Down…
- Jesse gave us a bit of a scare earlier today when he had a rather nasty allergic reaction to some hummus. Long standing readers may remember that the little fella suffered terribly with allergies from the age of about 6 months to just over 1 year. There were fraught moments spent watching him swell up before our eyes, times when we weren’t sure if he could breathe and a number of frantic ambulance rides to A&E. He had a multitude of tests as an outpatient and was given a clean bill of health almost a year ago when the paediatrician ruled out any remaining allergies, believing that he had grown out of them. So you can imagine our surprise today when his eyes started to swell. Luckily we recognised the signs immediately and had the medicine close at hand. He was really sleepy afterwards and quite blotchy but thankfully OK overall. I’m just baffled as to what/why he reacted after all this time.
- I have been in dissertation hell for most of this week. I just can’t seem to get my ideas straight in my head and I spend so much time thinking I just can’t do it that, guess what, I can’t. Fingers crossed for a better week of study next week, the deadline is drawing ever nearer.
- Total lack of brain space for blogging. If I’m not worrying about my dissertation, I’m worrying about why I’m not worrying about my dissertation. My brain just doesn’t seem to be capable of any kind of creativity at the moment. Which is sad because blogging would be the perfect way to unwind from all the stress of studying.
- After almost a week of antibiotics my chest infection hasn’t budged. In fact, if anything, it’s worse. I’ll be off to the GP again on Monday morning in the hope he can fix this serious case of lung ache.

I love reading about the films you watch etc, they always sound fabulous and make me want to hunt them down. I do like to broaden my horizons!
Gosh, how frightening to have another allergic episode after so long of Jesse being OK. Hope the little man is well recovered now?
I really feel for you in regard to the dissertation hell. I was doing mine in the height of summer back in 2007, and I literally spent my days, weeks and months chained to the spare bed at PIL’s which became my workspace…not fun. BUT…the end results made it worth it…just remember how much you wanted to do this course, hopefully that provides a glimmer of hope and inspiration? Sending you love, hugs and Double Deckers 🙂
Enjoy your curry xxx
Poor Jesse! You must have had such a fright. Sending him lots of ‘get well soon’ hugs.
I don’t envy you, doing your dissertation. The thought of it alone makes me shudder! The Chanel Fatale should definitely be a Wedding Day contender btw – you look so glamourous wearing it! So jealous that I can’t pull off red.
Sounds like you have a perfect evening planned 🙂 xx
Oh, gorgeous images by the way! I particularly love the second one – so simple yet utterly gorgeous, with the twinkly gems cascading down her back. I love how you write about vintage things with such passion xx
@Laura It’s only been the last year that I’ve really gotten into early/silent films. Before that I was strictly a 40s/50s/early 60s kind of girl. I’m so glad I have though as some of the films from the 20s and 30s are just so amazing, particularly because they are so simple. Louise Brooks is so incredibly seductive on screen and it’s all down to her eyes and the way she carries herself as she obviously doesn’t speak on film. You should give it a whirl, you might love it!
It’s so strange about Jesse but hummus was the very first thing he ever reacted to. We thought he was allergic to sesame (in the tahini thats used in hummus) but it was ruled out by skin prick tests and blood tests plus he has had it in the last year with no problems. I’m serioulsy baffled!
I know I’ll get there with the dissertation, it’s just that the process is so horrible. This too shall pass though, hey!
@Lollipop Thank you for the hugs. He was fine once the meds kicked in, alhtough they made him a little sleepy.
I’m glad you like the lippy, I’m def leaning towards it for the wedding but I keep changing my mind. All I know is it will def be red!
I love that shot of the back of her dress too, it looked stunning on screen.

I watched that film years ago when I was at uni…amazing!! I’ll have to see if I can find a copy on DVD! 🙂 I’ve seen Jekyll and Hyde and Nosferatu done in the same way with a silent film musican playing along and it’s a totally different experience to watchig a regular film…there’s so much more drama! My local independant cinema tends to do it once or twice a year and usually on Halloween! I have to find out what they’re getting next! 🙂
Hope you’re felling better soon! I had a chest infection lurking around for months last Winter so I feel your pain! I found that manuka honey helped ease my chest so it might be worth giving that a try! 🙂 xxx
