This past Wednesday was my birthday.

It was a funny old day. Wonderful, but funny.

The children were away of course, and it was odd not waking up to the sound of them singing me happy birthday. I really missed them.

There was also studying to be done. But if you have to work on your dissertation on your birthday you have to do it with chocolate, no? The box of Thorntons Mr. LA gifted to me lasted less than 24 hours, a new personal best in terms of my chocolate consumption. I did take the evening off though. It was wonderful getting ready on my own, without having to entertain the children at the same time. I painted my nails with Revlon Cherries in the Snow over an episode of Sex and the City and had some classic Madonna on full blast while I did my makeup. After all these years, I still think I sound good when I sing ‘Like a Virgin’. Mr. LA’s face tells me I probably don’t.

Estee Lauder DoubleWear foundation and concealer, MAC MSF Natural, Sue Devitt blush in Koh Samui, MAC Shroom e/s, matte brown e/s from Sleek Storm palette, Clinique gel liner, Max Factor Masterpiece Max mascara, Revlon Cherries in the Snow lipstick.

Sheer kimono style top {ADORE this. Buy it, buy it now!!}, black vest and baxter skinny jeans: Topshop, black wedges: New Look {a zillion years ago}, sparkly clutch: Accessorize {also old}, necklace: Oliver Bonas {a fabulous gift from my best friend that I haven’t stopped wearing}

The boy and I begun our evening by heading to a local Japanese restaurant for dinner. The food at Steaks ‘n’ Sushi was spectacular and certainly fulfilled my huge sushi craving. The Wasabi chips were a particular highlight. A stack of the best homemade fries I’ve ever tasted, drizzled with a creamy wasabi dressing. Mmmmm! What I wouldn’t give for a plate of these right now! The monkfish was also delicious.All this was washed down with copious amounts of sake. It seemed like a good idea at the time*.After taking as long as possible over our meal {so as to take full advantage of being childless for the evening}, we headed to The Rusty Bike, one of my favourite drinking spots in Exeter. We were joined by some of my fabulous friends, including the gloriously pink haired Nat of Modal Corpus and her boy, The Beard.

I drank vodka and laughed a lot before stumbling home elegantly with Mr. LA just before midnight.

Missing the children aside, it was, quite simply, a perfect birthday.

* I might have had a teeny tiny hangover the following day. I can neither confirm or deny reports of requiring a significant number of painkillers.
