The Faraway Tree Bristol Poached Eggs HyacinthStrawberries and Cream

  • Waking up slowly and of our own accord. It was our last morning alone before the children returned from their week away. We definitely made the most of it.
  • Sipping tea in the kitchen.
  • Making scrambled egg for breakfast.
  • Luxuriating in the sunshine pouring in through the French windows at the back of our house.
  • Hanging wet washing outside for the first time this year.
  • Slipping into the shower.
  • Pulling on a frock, applying my makeup and blow drying my hair.
  • Getting the house in order.
  • Appreciating how easy it had been to keep the place tidy while the children were absent. I didn’t step on a single piece of Lego all week.
  • Rushing to answer the front door as we heard the car in the drive.
  • Giving and receiving huge squishy hugs.
  • Listening to the children speak with great enthusiasm about their various adventures.
  • Peering nervously at Jesse’s thumb. He’d knocked it on a trampoline the day before and it had become quite swollen.
  • Deciding a quick trip to A&E was called for. After jumping in the car with his parents, Mr L.A. ended up waiting all afternoon for an X-ray. As it turned out, Jesse’s thumb was fine, just badly bruised.
  • Taking a leisurely stroll in the sunshine to visit a recently opened cafe on Church Road. The Faraway Tree is lovely, I highly recommend.
  • Tucking into a plate of poached eggs and chatting away with Izzy.
  • Popping across the road to pick up some fruit and veg from Dig In. If you’re local, check out their veg box delivery scheme. Well worth signing up for.
  • Meandering home through the park.
  • Pottering about in the kitchen while Izzy watched cartoons.
  • Waiting patiently for the boys to return home.
  • Mixing up my current favourite salad. Fennel, celery, mint and lemon dressed in a little olive oil. Delicious!
  • Slipping some huge fish cakes into the oven.
  • Settling down for supper.
  • Enjoying the sight of us all together again around the dinner table.
  • Dunking the children into the bath.
  • Reading Jesse a bedtime story. We made a start on Fantastic Mr Fox. Such a brilliant tale.
  • Curling up beneath a blanket on the sofa with Izzy.
  • Heading to bed for an early night.
  • Sleeping in.
  • Coming downstairs to find the children in front of the TV with their dad.
  • Watching them eat breakfast while I nursed a large mug of tea.
  • Meal planning for the week ahead and completing my online shop.
  • Enjoying the hyacinths I’d bought the day before.
  • Feeling a tiny bit guilty when they began to set off Mr L.A.’s allergies.
  • Eating egg mayonnaise sandwiches for lunch.
  • Smiling as the children put together a short film with Mr L.A.’s help.
  • Being made to watch the end result over and over and over again.
  • Working through a few jobs in the yarden.
  • Dusting off the outdoor furniture, retrieving the cushions from the attic and very much looking forward to a summer spent lounging outside.
  • Listening to Mr L.A. play peacemaker as the children squabbled upstairs.
  • Deciding they both had a bad case of back-to-school-itis.
  • Making roast potatoes.
  • Cooking pies, veg and yorkshire puds.
  • Eating too much.
  • Finding just enough room for the first strawberries of the season.
  • Chuckling as Jesse bemoaned the fact it was Spanish fruit as opposed to English.
  • Herding the children into the bath.
  • Tucking them in for the night.
  • Trying to mentally prepare for an incredibly busy week. Wish me luck.
