Most of you will have gathered by now that I have a bit of a thing for cake. Whether we’re talking baking, eating or just generally gazing at the yummy deliciousness of cake, I am most definitely a fan.

So it will come as no surprise that one of the wedding related tasks that excited me the most was the prospect of selecting the wedding cake.

Unfortunately, the traditional 3-tiered royal iced numbers that tend to get wheeled out at weddings do little for me. They simply don’t have me salivating in quite the same way as, say, a beautiful homemade cream filled Victoria sponge might…. or a rich, dense chocolate cake topped with a silky genache and fresh fruit…. or a mound of squidgy brownies… or a mountain of perfectly iced cupcakes… or, or… I could go on forever.

So why stop at one cake, why stop at 3 tiers? Why not treat myself *ahem* I mean my guests to an entire cake buffet filled with a variety of different homemade baked goods?

The inspiration…So here’s the plan…

We cover a table in my paternal grandmother’s beautiful crisp vintage linen. We adorn it with numerous cake stands and plates. Nothing will match, we’ve already started collecting some beautiful pieces, a couple of stunning glass stands and a gorgeous old-fashioned tiered plate with roses and gold leaf. Then myself and all the women (and even a few men) from my closest family will fill these serving dishes with our delicious homemade cakes and treats. I’m hoping for layer cakes, brownies, cupcakes, a loaf cake or three, a Victoria sponge… maybe even some macaroons!

I think it will be both beautiful and delicious! How about you ladies, are you a fan of traditional wedding cakes or would you welcome a slice of something from my cake buffet?
