Until this past weekend I’d never made, or eaten, s’mores.
I think the traditional campfire treat probably belongs to the imaginary American childhoods we create for ourselves through the film and television of our youth. We ‘know’ s’mores like we know corn dogs, twinkies and candy corn. They provoke nostalgia for a time and place we were never really part of, but is somehow part of us.
Making s’mores was on our Summer List, but the lack of campfire and my aversion to the Great Outdoors, coupled with the absence of Graham Crackers on these shores, necessitated the invention of an indoor, anglicised version of the snack.
You will need:
Chocolate digestives {I used ones coated in milk chocolate as that was all they had at my local Spar, but I think dark would probably make a nicer accompaniment to the sickly sweet mallows}
Marshmallows
A hot grill/broiler
Izzy and Jesse laid out the biscuits and marshmallows {alternating pink and white of course} and then retreated to the back of the kitchen as I carefully slid the baking tray under the hot grill. It took no more than a minute for the marshmallows to toast nicely. I let them cool slightly before the children placed the second digestive on top ready for the all important squidge!
Were s’mores a part of your childhood? Are you tempted to give these a try? I ate two in quick succession on Saturday. Delicious.
Oh, and if digestives and ‘pink and whites’ are a little trashy for you, how about some gourmet s’mores?

Those look super yummy! My daughter is more partial to eating just the marshmallows while the graham crackers & nestle bar sit ignored on her plate. I’m guessing it has something to do with every 4-year-old’s desire to be sticky. 🙂
They do love to be sticky don’t they?! Haha!

There is only one word that comes to mind after reading this post…. NOM.
I will definitely be making these with my boy this Christmas! (Yes, I used the ‘C’ word!)
Lovely blog btw xx
Haha! I caught myself thinking about Christmas earlier today. Almost time to get started on a few homemade presents…

Omg they look so delicious. I don’t like marshmallows at all unless they are melted and involve chocolate so I must try these.
Mmmmmmm! Yes, gooey mallows and chocolate are the best. Can’t wait for proper hot chocolate weather so I can indulge in a big mug with marshmallows on top. Delicious!
