This afternoon we finally made our trip up to paediatric outpatients to see the consultant about Jesse’s allergies.
I have real issues with hospitals. Not just in a ‘oh, I don’t really like them, they smell funny and they’re full of sick people’ kind of way. It’s more of a ‘I’m panicking, I can’t breathe and I’m going to be sick or pass out’ kind of thing. Obviously, I managed to overcome my anxiety and get little J to his appointment but I did feel like crying on more than one occasion.
Unfortunately, we didn’t really get any concrete answers today. However, the doctor was convinced that Jesse probably has multiple allergies. The poor thing had to have some blood taken. He was terribly brave (unlike me).
While we wait for them to test for antibodies we have to eliminate these 5 foods from his diet:
1. Egg – Tricky, it’s in loads of things that you wouldn’t even think of. So no pesto sauce, no quorn, no white pasta…
2. Sesame – Easy enough. No hummus and we’ll have to be careful of seeded bread and rolls
3. Chick Peas – The doctor kept saying that this would be easy as nobody eats chickpeas but we have them at least once or twice a week! Although not anymore, I guess.
4. Tomato – So much of my cooking repertoire is tomato based. The saddest part though is that Jesse really loves them.
5. Citrus – Not too difficult but it’s a shame. He loves satsumas and they’re such an easy snack when you’re out and about.
I suppose the appointment has eased some of my worry but I’m still impatient to find out the results of the blood tests. Jesse may need further tests to determine his exact allergies and we may have to carry adrenaline for him if the doctor deems it necessary.
Ahhhhhh, honestly! I swear children are sent here to cause us worry!
In order to end on a positive note I thought I’d share the inspiration for the title of this post. Having explained all of Jesse’s problems to her, Izzy seems to keep confusing the word ‘allergic’ with the word ‘addicted’. So, much to my amusement, she’ll enthusiastically say ‘Mum, I’m totally allergic to chocolate’ or ‘uuugggh, muuuuuum, I don’t want to go to school, I’m addicted to it’. She actually has quite a good vocabulary for a 5 year old but I guess she still gets confuddled at times! Anyway, I keep getting this song stuck in my head as a result.

Aw I hope your little one is feeling better – and you too – seems like anxiety and motherhood go hand-in-hand!
Addcted to school haha…that’s so cute!
Aww bless him !!
I used to have loads off alergies when I was little, And I too was allergic to egg really badly, Couldnt eat any thing containing egg at all 🙁 and had to carry an epipen with me, I was slowly introduced to things that contained it as i grew up in my childhood Like cakes etc, But as I got in my teens I had grown out of my allergies, Im now 16 and have no problems excpet on the rare occasion that i eat something and my exzema will re-apear, Ive never ate an acctuall egg in my life I suppose you just get used to not eating them!!!!
Hope you find out whats hes allergic too soon, Bless him,

Aww poor little thing. Hopefully you’ll know soon for sure what it is, and you’ll be able to start altering diets accordingly 🙂 and that’s really sweet about Izzy 🙂 Haha!
poor litte guy! i’m glad you know what he’s dealing with though! i know what you mean about kids being here to make us worry (my 2-year-old gives me plenty of grey hairs). motherhood isn’t for the faint of heart, that’s for sure! 🙂
Noooo, the poor little fellow – so many nice things on that list – why couldn’t it be say, cucumbers and saffron he’s allergic too. Fingers crossed they narrow it down to less.
