Although there are a few niggly little jobs left to do, Jesse’s is definitely the most ‘done’ of all the rooms we’ve tackled so far. It’s also one of my favourite places to hang out. That Ikea bed is all kinds of comfy.
The first thing we did after moving in was tear up the grotty carpet and enlist the help of some professionals to restore the existing floorboards. Our long-term plan is to give the hallway, stairs and landing the same treatment. The walls were then treated to two coats of Gauze Mid and the woodwork was brightened up with a slick of Shirting, both by Little Greene.
As Jesse previously shared a room with his sister, he needed all new furniture. I’m pretty evangelical about the STUVA system from Ikea that we opted for, although I’m still tweaking the interior fittings to fully meet our needs.
I’m slowly building a collection of vintage globes to display above the wardrobe too. I love the colour they bring to what would otherwise be a bare corner of the room. The lampshade is the Kura by Habitat.
I recreated the gallery wall from the children’s shared room in Exeter above Jesse’s bed. The word banner is a new addition from Papermash, but the ‘Reading Makes Your World Big‘ print by Goldlion is an old favourite. ‘Hello Cloud‘ by the same artist is equally adored. Sadly, the ‘Let The Wild Rumpus Start’ print is no longer available {although this digital download is similar}. The postcards are from Paperchase.
Book storage was a big consideration in this room. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m 100% happy with the shelving we settled for and, somewhere down the line {when Mr. LA has forgotten the trouble he had with the walls during installation}, I’d like to replace them with something like this.
In contrast, I’m absolutely thrilled with the Ikea hack we have going on beside the bed. The BEKVAM spice rack costs a mere £3 and, after a few coats of primer and paint, it makes the sweetest little book shelf. I take great delight in rotating the titles on display. The nearby candy ball hook rack is both functional and fun.
It’s a pretty impressive before and after, I think you’ll agree…
Nonetheless, there are still a few things to finish off. The ‘to do’ list looks something like this:
- Install blackout blinds.
- Tweak the book and toy storage until they’re perfect.
- Repaint the door. I’m considering something colourful for the interior after seeing this. Maybe yellow?
- Hang a piece of large scale art on the wall behind the door. At the moment I’m leaning towards something by Showler & Showler.
- Purchase a small rug for the floor beside the bed.
- Maybe add some wall stickers? And more cushions?
So, you like? Jesse loves it. The minute we moved him in he seemed more settled and he relishes any opportunity to show off his very own big boy bedroom.

LOVE! Such a perfect little boys room, light and his own little space 🙂
Thanks Laura, I fell in love with the light the first time I saw the house. I knew we could turn this little room into something wonderful for J.

Looks fab! Perfecting your little one’s room is the best feeling! I spent 9 months preparing my little Elsie’s nursery and the day she moved in to it was so special! Xx
I totally agree Lyndsey. I feel so lucky that we finally have space for them both to have a room of their own.

Yellow for the inside of the door would be a good pop, loving the spice rack usage, I might steal the idea for beside my dressing table to put perfumes/nice bottles in
I’m definitely leaning towards yellow for the door, but I also wondered about a darker grey. I’ll be using the spice rack trick in other rooms for sure! It would be perfect for purfumes.

Oh, that’s such a lovely bedroom. I really like how it isn’t a really cliché boys bedroom. Such happy colours! Good job done!
Really looking forward to seeing how your whole house progresses 🙂 xx
Thanks Rebecca, I try really hard to be gender neutral. Plus I love colour too much!

It looks beautiful, Franky – colorful and bright but not over the top chaotic. Great job!
Thank you Monika, luckily the room gets lots of light which helps I think.

Oh it’s SO CUTE! I especially love the clever spice rack book shelf. My favourite bit has to be the ‘Wild Rumpus’ print though – I love Where The Wild Things Are 🙂 xx
What a great job! And that bed looks so cosy! Love the curtains they add such a happy playful feel.
Very cute, I keep meaning to pick up some of those spice racks. I can see why he loves it!
