Apologies for being somewhat silent on the blogging front over the last few days. I didn’t feel like posting over the weekend, I think my brain was too full of university stuff.
Audrey has the right idea in this picture, she’s exactly where I need to be right now, in bed. I’m nursing the mother of all hangovers after a rather messy night out yesterday. A few of us from my film seminar group decided to have a little Christmas get-together before we all depart for the holidays on Friday. We ended up at one of the Student Union bars on campus doing the pub quiz (we came fourth… we aced the film round). It was loads of fun and it was nice to get to know each other a little better outside of the classroom.
Now, it’s fairly obvious that I don’t get out much. Having 2 small children is not exactly conducive to the maintenance of a banging social life. And perhaps drinking with a group of hardened students might not have been the most sensible way to ease myself into the Christmas period, I consumed far, far too much red wine and ended up being put in a taxi home at around 1am (yes… on a school night). Slummy mummy or what?
Being woken up by the children less than 5 hours after I had tumbled into bed was painful, to say the least. Thankfully, the Mister brought me copious amounts of tea and let me wallow in the shower for a little longer than usual. Such a gem that man. I managed to get Jesse to nursery OK. I can only hope that my blood shot eyes and dazed expression didn’t give me away.
I haven’t exactly had the most productive day, although I managed to read more than I thought would. I self-medicated with paracetamol, a McDonalds breakfast (mmmmm… grease) and gallons of water. By the afternoon I was feeling much more human and I actually manged to cook a roast chicken for dinner. I served it with some roast sweet potatoes and braised little gem lettuces (a Nigella dish that feels like the ultimate temple food… delicious, nourishing and good for the soul). Now all I need to complete my recovery is an early night.
In my defense, this certainly isn’t something I make a habit of doing. My classmates were shocked to learn that last night marked only my 3rd visit to the Student Union bar… ever!
Have you enjoyed any cheeky Christmas drinks yet? How do you cure a hangover ladies?

Sorry to hear you’ve been feeling so poorly, but glad you had a good night out! I went out for my boyfriend’s birthday last weekend and also had a bit too much red wine (followed by beer!). Miraculously though I didn’t have much of a hangover (don’t worry – I usually have horrific ones).
I love that photo from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, it makes me want to go to sleep! Wish I had a cat like Cat.
Oh, and my top hangover cure = mugs of tea. Lots of them.
oh you poor thing!! i hope the hangover didnt last too long (it sounded like it didnt). my never fail cure for a hangover that could slay a wallrus is (like you did) McDonalds or some other greasy hamburger place. My trick for (usually) preventing one is to drink water all night after you go to bed (confusing, i know, but if you wake up periodically to go to the batheroom, seriously, down a bottle of water… repeat the next time you get up to pee). the inconvinience of having to the bathroom all night is a lot more easy to deal with than a head that feels like it’s on the verge of exploding.
and no, i have no experience with this… hehehe!
Call it preparation for NYE…. x
@Lorna Wow no hangover AND you mixed your drinks! Very lucky!! I’m feeling much better this evening, if a little tired after a long shift at work with crazy xmas shoppers! One day I will have a cat called CAT, just waiting for the children to grow out of their allergies!!
@RMb I’ll have to try the water trick nest time, thanks for the tip! And yea, right, I’m sure you have no experience 😉
@m4dwine Oh dear… it’s going to be messy isn’t it!! Can’t wait! xxx
Sounds like a fun night. I really can’t do it anymore and my hangovers usually last a couple of days. There’s no tried and tested cure for me. I just try and lay in bed for as long as humanly possible or take the duvet downstairs! I am very impressed that you still managed to cook a yummy dinner.

Ahhh… I’m laughing cause I’m such a Nan and just can’t hack it anymore! Sounds ike you dealt with it like a trooper though.
Glad you had a good night out though Franky, us Mummies deserve it! I had one a couple of weekends ago and was hanging for two whole days! NOT my idea of fun! Such a shame alcohol has such horrid side effects, I very rarely overindulge! xxx
I thought of you when I went in to Pull & Bear and saw some Audrey t shirts 🙂
Hope you’re well!
