There’s a huge blackberry bush at the end of our street. Collecting the fruit had always been an annual ritual, until the council decided to hack away at the trailing branches a couple of years ago. Suddenly the best berries were beyond our reach and I was forced to buy overpriced punnets from the supermarket in order to get my fix of autumnal fruit.
The bush has finally grown enough for us to reinstate our family tradition, so on the first weekend of September we spent an evening picking fruit in the fading sun.

Izzy found a great glut of fruit hidden away in the shadows and diligently picked every berry she could reach. Jesse took charge of the basket as he strolled up and down in the sunshine, rushing back to his sister each time her hands were full.

The first day of September seemed like a good enough excuse for apple and blackberry crumble. I followed my usual recipe, gently stirring the jewels of deep purple fruit through the apple sauce once I’d removed it from the heat.
And just like that, it was Autumn.

I was just thinking what a fabulous (virtual) memory box your blog is for the kids xx
Yes, you’re so right. I love going back through old posts to see how much they’ve grown!

On the evening of one of those sunny days last week, me and a friend were getting extraordinarily excited about autumn – the changing light, the changing colours, soft cardigans, boots, the woodsmoke air and fruits. I love it! One of my other friends said she hated autumn, or even worse (!), never really given it much thought. I was unexpectedly outraged 😀 Activities like this one make a good autumn day one of the best. Another theory – This may have something to do with my having a autumn birthday!
The blackberries around here have already peaked and most have shrivelled up now. A little annoyed as I was hoping to make some blackberry vodka this year. Might take a wander down the canal, see if I can find any later fruiting bushes (and before the Devil spits on them, obvs!)
Can’t beat free food 🙂
