Books are a big deal in our house. If I was pushed to choose the activity I enjoy sharing most with the children it would have to be reading – both with and to them.

At the beginning of the summer Izzy graduated from being read to by us at bedtime to reading alone.

I watch her each evening as she sprawls out on the sofa, lost in whatever paperback she’s currently reading, and feel both overwhelming pride and a deep sense of loss. I’m thrilled she’s caught the reading bug and has embarked on her own great literary adventure, but I also miss lying next to her, her head resting on my chest, as I read aloud. To think I used to moan about her picking The Gruffalo fifteen bedtimes in a row!

The move to ‘chapter books’ was largely fuelled by a passion for a certain bespectacled wizard. J.K Rowling is revered in our house, held up like some kind of bookish saint. Harry, Ron and Hermione were never part of my own childhood, but I can relate to the all consuming love Izzy exhibits for the series.

Sometimes at the weekend the house will fall quiet and I’ll realise she’s taken herself off upstairs to read. Three hours later she’ll emerge from the bedroom, bleary eyed as if drunk on soporific words, and regale me with a detailed description of the last six chapters.

The reading nook is still a work in progress. We’ve curtains to hang on the window to the right, and I’m certain I’ll add some artwork to this corner at some point too. I’m also tempted to create some more shelves to the left of the alcove as, no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot stop buying the children books. I feel a rug is also essential, but the right one is proving elusive.
