Most of you will have gathered by now that I have a bit of a thing for cake. Whether we’re talking baking, eating or just generally gazing at the yummy deliciousness of cake, I am most definitely a fan.
So it will come as no surprise that one of the wedding related tasks that excited me the most was the prospect of selecting the wedding cake.
Unfortunately, the traditional 3-tiered royal iced numbers that tend to get wheeled out at weddings do little for me. They simply don’t have me salivating in quite the same way as, say, a beautiful homemade cream filled Victoria sponge might…. or a rich, dense chocolate cake topped with a silky genache and fresh fruit…. or a mound of squidgy brownies… or a mountain of perfectly iced cupcakes… or, or… I could go on forever.
So why stop at one cake, why stop at 3 tiers? Why not treat myself *ahem* I mean my guests to an entire cake buffet filled with a variety of different homemade baked goods?
The inspiration…

So here’s the plan…
We cover a table in my paternal grandmother’s beautiful crisp vintage linen. We adorn it with numerous cake stands and plates. Nothing will match, we’ve already started collecting some beautiful pieces, a couple of stunning glass stands and a gorgeous old-fashioned tiered plate with roses and gold leaf. Then myself and all the women (and even a few men) from my closest family will fill these serving dishes with our delicious homemade cakes and treats. I’m hoping for layer cakes, brownies, cupcakes, a loaf cake or three, a Victoria sponge… maybe even some macaroons!
I think it will be both beautiful and delicious! How about you ladies, are you a fan of traditional wedding cakes or would you welcome a slice of something from my cake buffet?

Oh wow that sounds AMAZING!! Ill be opting for something a little less traditional for my wedding cake, but I do love your idea. xxx
mmm very nice.
I had a big 3 layered wedding cake but it was chocolate orange sponge and ganache – the layers were dark, milk and white choc…it was yum!!!
Sounds perfect – we are having Ed’s Mum bake us a special tired chocolate brandy cake – it’s Ed’s favourite. It’ll also be our dessert. I’m not a fan of boring fruit cake….
We might go for a cheese (cake) for the evening with savoury biscuits too – yum!
(oh and this is Emma btw, I’ve been reincarnated)
That’s such a good idea! I hadn’t really given much thought to the wedding cake but I have to say your idea sounds so much better than the traditional cake!x
@Lollipop Glad you approve, can’t wait to see waht you go for!
@LissyLou Wow, your cake sounds delicious!! I love the idea of not having the usual fruit cake.
@Eating Diamonds Oh. My. God. Chocolate brandy cake sounds amazing! I want to do the fella a chocolate bourbon cake for his 30th in Jan (he’s a big JD drinker, loves a whisky sour). I wonder if the recipe would transfer!! I’m not a fruit cake fan either but my Dad was (and his brother still is) so we may have a little one going on somewhere amongst the selection. Cheesecake sounds good, some frinds had that as their wedding cake in the summer and it doubled as pudding too.
Oh and, yay!! You’re back!!
@Dani But you HAVE to think about cake at all times!! It’s the law!!

Omigod that sounds amazing….
I also love cake. Too much. Me and S make a lot of Swedish sokkerkaka – our favourite flavour being lime and coconut.
Your idea is superb! I love how it will be so personal and much more delicious than standard wedding cake. Fondant looks cool but the taste?! Blech. Also this is great because it really means there is something for everyone. If someone isn’t a big chocolate person they can have a slice of pound cake with strawberries and whipped cream (that would be me!).
At our wedding we had a pie table and also a variety of delicious cupcakes. There was Toll House Cookie pie, apple pie and another kind that I forget! The caterer prepared them all and everyone raved and raved about them. And if someone didn’t like pie, there were plenty of cupcakes!
Sadly I didn’t truly get my fill 🙁 You’ll find that many of the things you plan for your wedding, and are excitedly looking forward to, disappear from your night as time shifts into warp drive.
That is such a wonderful idea! I think traditional cakes can be a bit predictable, so I am also trying to solve the “cake issue” in other ways. I really want to get cupcakes maybe, but a) it will be really expensive and b) I am scared the guests might be a bit dissapointed. So I prefer your idea to be honest!
What a truly fabulous idea…trust you Franky, I’m so impressed 🙂 I knew seeing your plans unfold would fill me with excitement for you, it’s going to be splendid 🙂 xxx
That sounds beautiful and lovely that you’re using your grandma’s linen!
My friend has just started a vintage homewares business, you should check it out for cakestands – she makes lovely ones from tea cups!
