As a small business copywriter, one of the things I help my clients get to grips with is viewing their products and services through the eyes of their dream clients. Why is this so important? Because what we think we’re selling often isn’t what our customers are buying.

For example, my Virtual Assistant, Emma, sells administrative support. But when I hired her, I was buying time. Time to focus on other areas of my business or be with my kids. I was buying more headspace, so I could focus on generating new ideas. And I was buying a reduction in stress and overwhelm, so I wouldn’t burn out.

If you want to create copy that converts clicks into paying clients, you’ve got to tap into the true value of what you do. You also need to express this value in a way your dream clients can relate to. The best way to do this is by addressing their goals and challenges – the things they want to achieve and the obstacles currently standing in their way.

To use myself as an example, I may be selling words on a page, but my clients are buying much more than that. It’s up to me to communicate the extra, often unexpected benefits of working with a small business copywriter.

4 Unexpected Benefits of Working with a Small Business Copywriter

  • 1. Clarity

Good copy requires clarity. It’s a non-negotiable part of the process. You need to know who you are, what you do, and why you do it. You need to understand your ideal client and get to grips with things like market position. As well as big picture stuff like brand values, you need clarity around your products or services. How much do they cost? What’s included in the price? More importantly, what isn’t? Can you describe what it’s like to work with you?

Getting to grips with these things on your own can be overwhelming, but figuring out the details is baked into my working process. By the end of your project, you’ll have the answers to these questions AND the means to communicate them.

  • 2. Accountability

If ‘update website copy’ or ‘write blogs’ has been on your to-do list for a while, you’ll probably appreciate the focus and accountability that comes from outsourcing these tasks.

Working with me is a collaborative process. There’s a lot that that has to happen before writing can begin. Strategy, research, development. There’s also feedback to provide and amendments to approve. I’ll guide you through the process, keeping you on track with firm deadlines and gentle reminders. I want your copy and content to be the best it can possibly be, so I won’t let you rush the groundwork or skip any crucial steps.

  • 3. Zero Cringe

Bragging about yourself is hard, but I have no problem doing it on your behalf. In fact, it’s one of the things I love most about my job. There will be no downplaying your expertise or achievements on my watch! I’ll highlight your skills, emphasise your experience, and add ‘award-wining’ to your About page without breaking a sweat.

  • 4. Confidence

When they first get in touch, many of my clients say they’re embarrassed or ashamed of their existing website. They avoid sharing it with potential clients, and they know they’re leaving money on the table as a result.

Funnily enough, when someone expertly captures your USP and describes your brand the way it deserves to be seen, it massively boosts your confidence. After working with me, you’ll feel proud of your website and confident in your voice. Hopefully, you’ll never hesitate to send someone a link to your sales page or portfolio again!
