For me, wearing red lipstick is a guaranteed antidote to feeling tired, frumpy and depressed. One swipe of the bullet and I instantly feel more glamorous, more put together (even when I’m clearly not). Therefore, this morning, after yet another crap sleepless night, I decided to try out the newest addition to my red lippy collection.

Christian Dior Diorific High Fashion Lipstick in No. 013 Roulette Red

Everything about this lipstick says vintage glamour to me. How could anyone fail to feel a little bit special when applying a lipstick that comes in such gorgeous packaging. It is so shiny and has a real classic, vintage look to it. You can just picture Marilyn Monroe or Sophia Loren pulling this out of their clutch bag on a trip to the powder room. I love it, possibly as much as the well known YSL Rouge Volupte packaging. Definitely one to feel proud of when reapplying in the ladies!

I also quite like the scent of this lipstick. It smells exactly how I imagine cosmetics from the 1940s/1950s would smell… a sort of dusky rose smell. (Actually that’s a really bad description. Just have a sniff next time you pass the Dior counter and you’ll see what I mean)

The colour itself is quite a pinky red. The finish is fairly matte but it does have a slight sheen to it. I didn’t feel the need to wear it with a gloss today (although it looks lush with NARS Greek Holiday worn over it).

I think this is perfect for us fair skinned gals. According to the woman on my local Dior counter, No. 014 is more of an orange red which might be better suited to those with a darker complexion or more yellow/olive undertones.

No. 013 reminds me of Revlon Cherries in the Snow although it is more of a true red than that (but not as red as MAC Russian Red… my ultimate red lippy). Does this make any sense? I hope the swatches below will help you unravel my ramblings! L-R MAC Russian Red, Diorific Roulette Red, Revlon Cherries in the Snow.

Today I paired this lipstick with a simple 1940s inspired eye (loosely following this tutorial). In spite of the tiredness I felt fairly wonderful and content as I wandered to the river with the children. I guess that’s the power of make-up.
