Home Is Wherever I'm With You

Deep breath. Pick up the phone. Dial number.

I continued to fiddle with my laptop, feigning nonchalance in an attempt to calm my nerves. The agent answered on the third ring and chirpily reeled off her well rehearsed greeting.

‘Smartmove Bristol, how may I help you?’

My voice began to falter as I tried to explain I was calling back about the house in Brislington. Attempting to sound confident, I told her we had decided to offer a little more for the property. ‘I’ll pass this on to the vendor and call you right back’ she said. I thanked her and the line went dead.

It was a chap who finally returned my call a few hours later. Mark I think his name was. The shrill sound of the land line rang through the house and I abruptly ended the other call I was on so I could answer.

Deep breath. Pick up the phone.

I closed my eyes and listened as Mark told me our offer had been accepted. My stomach lurched. ‘Congratulations’ he said, almost sounding as if he cared where my little family lives. Carl hovered in the doorway of our bedroom, smiling back at me as I grinned like a loon.

Sunlight streamed in through the window as I sat alone in the house. The radio played softly in the background while my mind began to wander slowly through the last 8 years. ‘My baby boy was born here’ I thought to myself.

Deep breath.
