Airstream Camper Retro Rocket Brooks Guesthouse Bristol
  • Treating Mr L.A. to a birthday lie-in.
  • Creeping downstairs with the children,
  • Blowing up balloons and laying out a pile of cards and presents.
  • Pulling party poppers when the birthday boy finally joined us downstairs.
  • Excitedly revealing his big birthday surprise. Having arranged for the children to sleepover with some friends, I’d booked us a stay at Brooks Guesthouse in one of their Retro Rockets, an 18ft Airstream trailer located on a rooftop above St Nicholas Market.
  • Cooking and eating an indulgent Saturday breakfast. The boys had sausages while Izzy and I  stuck to fried mushrooms, kale, hash browns and beaked beans.
  • Luxuriating in the shower.
  • Slowly getting ready to face the day.
  • Coaxing the kids into their clothes.
  • Packing an overnight bag.
  • Warming some soup for lunch.
  • Dozing on the sofa while the children watched a movie.
  • Throwing PJs and a change of clothes into their rucksacks.
  • Waving them off at the door.
  • Thanking our friends profusely and promising to repay the favour.
  • Taking an Uber into town.
  • Checking into our hotel.
  • Marvelling at the cool interior of our quirky accommodation.
  • Popping the cork on a bottle of bubbly.
  • Toasting Mr L.A’s birthday and our sixth wedding anniversary.
  • Heading out in search of dinner.
  • Ordering far too much food in Bar Buvette.
  • Sipping a Psychopomp G&T.
  • Deliberately not talking about the children.
  • Reminiscing about the night we got together.
  • Strolling to The Strawberry Thief.
  • Finding a cosy seat in the window and ordering our drinks.
  • Feeling lucky to have such a wonderful husband.
  • Wandering back to the hotel.
  • Climbing into bed.
  • Watching Rosemary’s Baby on the flat screen TV.
  • Waking up earlier than we would have liked. Children really have ruined us for sleeping in.
  • Opening an anniversary card and present. As the traditional gift for six years is sugar, Mr L.A. had treated me to a hamper of vegan sweets.
  • Making our way down to breakfast.
  • Trying to decide how to spend the rest of our day.
  • Checking out and travelling home.
  • Changing into our PJs and curling up on the sofa in front of Mindhunter.
  • Watching multiple episodes back-to-back.
  • Flicking through our wedding photos and feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
  • Inviting our friends in for a quick cup of tea when they brought Jesse home.
  • Chatting and laughing on the sofa.
  • Trying to resist the urge to catch up on housework.
  • Letting Jesse have a long soak in the bath.
  • Preparing pizza for dinner.
  • Waiting for Izzy to get back from her drama class.
  • Sitting down to eat.
  • Talking about what we were doing at the same time, six years previously.
  • Feeling very lucky to have such wonderful memories to look back on.
  • Getting the children ready for bed.
  • Managing one more episode of Mindhunter before heading upstairs ourselves.
  • Reading until I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
